Artist Bio

Sasha de Koninck is from Santa Monica, California. She decided to leave the west coast and all of its wonderful weather to explore the city of Baltimore and the greater east coast. After arriving in this far off place where she knew no one, she began her education at the Maryland Institute College of Art. She is currently pursuing a B.F.A. in fibers with a minor in creative writing. Her interests include, but are not limited to: art, theater, music, film, literature and going on adventures.

250 words or less on 'Highly Conductive'

Highly Conductive is the product of my interest in garments and sound. The first thing I looked to when beginning this project were graphic scores. I am very interested in visuals being interpreted into sound. I wanted to create a graphic score that was also an instrument. And I also wanted to focus on the body as an interface.
Performing has never been something that I thought I would be doing. But by becoming part of the interface, I had to become a performer. For me, Highly Conductive is just the beginning of a new exploration in fibers and sound.
I have combined my interest in sound and fiber arts before, but they were always separate entities. With this piece I was determined to make them one. I wanted the garment to produce the sound, to somehow become a musical instrument.
Highly Conductive truly is the culmination of my research and experimentation. This piece shows one aspect of combining sound and fiber projects. From here, I hope to continue my exploration of sound, fiber and the relationship that they can have. The next step in this process would be to make this piece totally self contained with fabric speakers and integrated electronics.

Finals

Its getting to be that time of year again. Finals. Here is what I am up to, and/or what I hope to be up to:

Existentialism

An essay on Sartre's play 'The Flies'. Can't wait.

Sound 1

I am performing my Smart Textiles project at The Vigil. It is a sort of music event. It starts at 7pm and ends at 7am the next day. I perform at 7:40, and then my graphic score is being performed at 10pm. I also hope to have a video projected. I feel like I am cheating by using my Smart Textiles as my final for this class, so I am hopefully going to create a sound piece and video to go along with it that will then be projected on the side of the Brown Center during the evening.

Smart Textiles

Two performances of my piece- one at In\Flux Gallery and one at RobotFest.

Modernism and After

A paper on Matisse and his textile collection.

Life Drawing

I have to turn in my portfolio and a sketchbook. Then we get it back with comments. And we have to sign each piece. I better start now, I don't want to get behind on my signatures.

I've finished the textile half of this project. Now I just need to get some help with the smart part and things will be finished.

Video Scoring Project

My latest project for my sound class is video scoring. We were allowed to create or find a video, delete the audio track and create our own score. Here is mine. I chose a scene from Fritz Lang's Metropolis.
